What is Twist Face Driver Technology
Twist Face Driver Technology Explained
Twist face driver technology is an innovation from TaylorMade Golf that employs a radical redesign of the golf driver’s face to counteract the most common miss-hit problems observed in beginning and intermediate golfers, alike. But in order to appreciate and understand exactly what problems twist face drivers, like the TaylorMade M3 Driver and TaylorMade M4 Driver, fix we need to understand what the most common swing problems are that can cause an off-center club face at impact.
Why Did TaylorMade Invent Twist Face Technology?
TaylorMade decided to analyze the swings of thousands of golfers of varying skill levels to determine – through data – the most common way that golfers mis-hit the golf ball and the manner in which an off-center club face at impact occurs. What the data revealed was that the most common driver misses resulted when the club contacted the golf ball high on the toe and/or low on the heel. Let’s back up for a moment and review the parts of our golf driver to really understand what a high-toe, low-heel impact is.
Understanding a High-Toe/Low-Heel Impact
Although there are many different parts to the golf driver, a quick look at the graphic to the left reveals the two basic golf club segments we are interested in here for understanding what the engineers at TaylorMade discovered: The Toe (front of the clubface) and The Heel (rear of the clubface). So a high-toe, low-heel impact is whenever the driver’s face contacts the ball, either, high up towards the front of the face (toe) or low down towards the rear of the face (heel).
Solving the High-Toe/Low-Heel Impact With Twist Face
Now that the data revealed the two most common ways golfers mis-hit their drivers, TaylorMade decided to come up with a revolutionary redesign of the face of the driver that would counteract each of these off-center clubface hits in order to reduce the negative effects on ball flight. The trick was to solve two problems with one club face!
To counteract the high-toe impact (which results in a hook), the face of the driver has been rotated (twisted) open towards the front of the clubface. Essentially, the loft angle of the club face has been increased (and the face opened) towards the toe. To counteract the low-heel miss-hit (which results in a slice), the face of the driver has been rotated (twisted) closed towards the heel of the club and the loft angle in this area of the face the club has been decreased.
A simple way to understand this new driver technology from TaylorMade is that if you hit one of these twist face drivers closer to the toe (front) portion, twistface technology will impart the necessary spin to get the ball back towards the center of the fairway. If you hit one of these M3 or M4 drivers closer to the heel (rear) portion of the club face, twistface driver technology will impart the necessary spin to help curve the golf ball back towards the center of the fairway. No matter what type of mis-hit you may have, these drivers can help counteract the negative effects and get your ball back towards the center line.
Can Twist Face Technology Really Help Me Hit Straighter Drives?
For anyone who doesn’t always hit their driver as straight as they would like, twist face technology can help. Whether you are a person who commonly hooks your driver, or a person who usually slices the ball when using your driver, the redesigned club face of the TaylorMade M3 Driver and TaylorMade M4 Driver, can dramatically improve the accuracy of your tee shots and result in a much straighter ball flight.
